Two years ago the Big Music Society commissioned 10 of Scotland’s most forward thinking Pipers to compose, and arrange 10 pieces of music which were performed to great acclaim at Celtic Connections 2017. We are finally setting out to record these pieces. You can join us and be part of this amazing journey which begins now! We’ve teamed up with PledgeMusic and have put together an array of unique gifts which you can pledge for. We would be very grateful if you joined us on this new, exciting, innovative journey. Thanks!!!

I was recently commissioned to write a tune by the very lovely human, Vickie Gray. The tune was written for her partner, Paul. Paul has been a Piper for 60 years, and Vickie is a Potter, and they are coming up to their 20th anniversary. They sell their crafts at the Farmer’s market in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, on the Eastern seaboard of Canada, and also enjoy a tune together. I was fortunate enough, many years ago, to have played at the Lunenburg Folk festival with a band called Brolum. A band of people that I shared some of my happiest memories with. Lunenburg is an incredibly beautiful place, full of the most welcoming folk. It would be an impossible task to put into words the sheer beauty of this place. You just have to go and see it for yourselves. It was a special experience writing this tune as I am so fond of this part of the world, and the people that inhabit it. Hopefully I’ll get back some day to share a wee tune and a dram with Vickie and Paul. All the best guys. Cheers. Ali
Burgess Bagpipes are looking for your help. They are creating the first ever Piping Centre in the Highlands. The facility will be located in Inverness, servicing the local areas. This is an invaluable asset to the surrounding communities. It will encourage people of all ages to go and learn the Bagpipes, an ancient art that will only remain alive through facilities such as this. The guys have started a Crowdfunder page where they offer many unique, one of a kind gifts in exchange for your help. If you can afford to pledge then you’ll be supporting an amazing cause, and will be joining them on an amazing journey. Follow the links below if you’d like to support the guys. Cheers

It’s here again! It’s that time of year where you stand toe to toe with your pals and battle against each other for the title of …..”the best at what you do, of the year”…..but only for that year of course. The next year you’re not the best, naturally. Funny old craic, eh?!? So, our division is the ‘Album of the year’. If you’d like to help myself and Ross vanquish everyone else’s great efforts, and when I say great, there are some beautiful pieces of work up in here, then you can vote for Symbiosis 2 here……….https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Scotstrad2018
I had other stuff to say…….but it should remain deep down in the depths…….for now! 😈
The time of year has come when popular vote decides who’s dain it better! What have you done better than the next person, band, project etc? Well, I’m not a fan of the idea of being placed in direct competition with those that you love and respect. The thought of your whole years work gearing towards receiving an award is something that makes me feel uneasy. It’s not part of the thought process, it’s not the reason why we do what we do. We love playing music, we love making music, creating, sharing, enjoying and being inclusive……not exclusive!! However, these ceremonies are part of the machine, part of the cogs that make the whole thing spin. It’s a promotional arrow in the quiver. Something that agents and promoters love. Looks good on the website and the posters. So, CATCH 22. Be passive. Allow them to happen. Get on with your existence in which many of us have been afforded the opportunity of being employed by something we love dearly! SYMBIOSIS 2 has been longlisted for album of the year……which I guess is good in that we put a lot of work into it, and folk like it.
A category which we would love to be nominated in, here begins the hypocritical bit, is the Belhaven innovation award. This provides a band, or project the opportunity to further develop their music. It’s a cash price of £25,000. Which would allow for a serious boost towards the production of more music, and further gig development. So……..we would be gracious if you would consider us for this category……and of course I have been brushing up on my Gaelic singing so……..you can vote for me in that category too. The outcome of this rant, I know, is kind of grey!! If you’d like to vote though, you can do so here……….https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/scotstradmusicawards2018
